The project focused on investigating the role of disinfection in preventing disease transmission, with a specific emphasis on the potential of UVC (Ultraviolet-C) disinfection technology. The research aimed to understand the principles and applications of UVC disinfection, evaluate its effectiveness in breaking the chain of infection, and explore its integration in various contexts.
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the limitations of existing intervention strategies became evident, necessitating the exploration of more effective disinfection approaches. UVC disinfection technology emerged as a promising solution due to its ability to inactivate pathogens and reduce the risk of infection.
The project developed a strategic framework called REACH (Research, Education & Awareness, Analysis & Adaptation, Collaboration, Holistic), which served as a guide for integrating UVC disinfection measures in different risk zones and contexts. Additionally, an adaptive disinfection framework (ADF) was introduced to enable flexibility and continuous improvement in disinfection practices.
The research findings emphasized the need for increased awareness, collaboration among stakeholders, policy frameworks, and ongoing research and innovation in UVC disinfection. The project also explored the implementation of the REACH framework in a case study involving the integration of UVC disinfection in an Indian public transport facility.
By effectively integrating UVC disinfection measures, this project aimed to enhance personal and public hygiene, mitigate the risks of infectious diseases, and contribute to a safer and healthier environment. The research serves as a foundation for future studies and initiatives in the field of disinfection and the prevention of disease transmission.
