Sysnopsis

This document is a compact yet detailed description of the graduation project by Gauri Kajrolkar who is pursuing her master’s degree at the National Institute of Design. The project was completed under the sponsorship and support of Noble Art and Craft, Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

The first step, during my initial days at Noble Arts and Craft, was to try and analyze the team and understand how a design setup functions, the quality of furniture produced, and their sense of aesthetics, and experience the existing resources to introduce myself to this new environment.

As I was designing these products I got to know, making and managing a workspace with a team of artisans successfully in a mutual learning environment led to a solid culmination of a journey that I believe every designer should experience. Material selection, and hardware sourcing by contacting local vendors and working with local artisans sensitize my observation and communication skills. It enabled me to become more versatile in my abilities, resulting in deep learning and growth. With the constant support and dedicated guidance from my mentor PravinSinh Solanki, I was able to put in my maximum effort in the project’s fulfillment.

This final degree document and the furniture range produced are a result of meticulous learning and understanding of the entire process of furniture making at a design and manufacturing house. It commenced the brand study, and design process which include research analysis and form exploration, etc to the actual manufacturing, material handling, joinery exploration, finishes, etc. The entire duration of the graduation project at Noble Arts and Crafts has been an opportunity with lots of experience and exposure to the design industry and is reflected through the course of the document.
