Sysnopsis

The Stitched and the Draped by Madhurima Patni is a sourcebook for designers. It is based on the Documentation of Traditional Indian Garments (also known as the DTIG Project, carried out by Madhurima Patni and her team) done in the decade of 80s by NID Ahmedabad. The DTIG project contains a research work of observing and studying people, communities, and cultures of Gujarat and Rajasthan via the medium of textile, apparel, and its various aspects, documented in text and visuals, including photographs and illustrations.

This project was initiated by NID Press (formerly NID Publications), supported by the discipline of Textile Design, the discipline of Photography Design, and Chinar Farooqui, an alumnus of textile design based out of Jaipur.

The scope of the graduation project included designing the sourcebook, which would serve as a historical document. A content structure for the book was worked out in close collaboration with the author and editor. It began with extensive research and referencing publications that fall within the realm of textile design and defining the physical aspects of a book — size, paper stock and binding. A distinct visual language was then developed, which included creating a typographic hierarchy, grid structure and collaging techniques for chapter openings and section separators. Layout design concepts with multiple iterations were worked on with constant client feedback at every project phase, which was consciously incorporated at every stage. This led to the conception of the proposed design, style sheet, flat plan and cover concepts for the book as a part of the deliverables.
