The modern-day definition of a smart device is connected to a more extensive system through which it is operable remotely/ without actually opening or directly interacting with the device unnecessarily. But conversely, it can be any device that can make our lives more convenient and efficient. Reducing one fundamental step or modifying it to reduce all the subsequent tiny steps required to get the job done can be a smart intervention. For instance, the first part of the project, the Thaw Zone, reduces the tedious process of thawing meat either by water bath or leaving it on the countertop, both with patient supervision, essentially into three simple steps- Load the meat box into the chamber and schedule a thaw cycle. Then, Unload the thawed meat, as and when required, straight out of the freezer, without the need for supervision. And the best part is that it’s okay if one forgets about the frozen meat, for they will get promptly notified beforehand if the meat is loaded in the Thaw Zone.
Then the second part is a genuine attempt to develop an experimental Design Process that works as an offshoot of the standard design process. It may be considered a quick exercise to kickstart the chain of thought into multiple potential prospective directions that might lead us to develop the next big thing. The final outcome- Canvas is an E-ink smart tablet coupled with the facia of a double-door refrigerator. The freezer door is for note-taking, task management, and other planning, while the fridge door is a true canvas! This superimposition of tech on tech to make optimum use of both is an ideal demonstration of the design process.
